Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
the Criterion for The Exterminating Angel is pretty poor, the movie deserves way better. it uses an old master and the extras are kinda thin - the booklet literally being the best part! what a far cry for Criterion nowadays. anyway, while I agree that it hopefully won't be the only Bunuel and more will be on the way, this is still an edition I can't wait to buy. Viridiana desperately needs a Bluray too, if we're talking the bigger/more known titles. especially since many of the missing Mexican ones seem to be held up / held by Criterion (very likely for Los Oliviados and El)
I would love to see Radiance release Center Stage, which I have likely said elsewhere in this thread

Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
It may not be an ideal release, but Radiance's editions haven't been too extraordinary either (i.e. outstanding transfers, copious extras), and I doubt it'll be a huge step up. I like the label, and will welcome a better release if that's what it is, but there are too many great Bunuel movies not available on blu-ray yet.

The Australian DVD had a commentary by Adrian Martin, porting that would be a good first step towards making this more enticing

The announcements have been teased with flags for Italy, Japan, France, and the US, so no Bunuel yet

I'd be thrilled if the Japanese title was Kinji Fukasaku's Japan Organized Crime Boss.

Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
'JCB' was one of the 2024 clues, so could well be for Japan [Organised] Crime Boss, and therefore might be the Japanese title for November. Similarly some have speculated the 'PDC' clue could be for Pastoral: To Die in the Country, as it's a title Fran has been chasing for years (he's even 'favourited' the film on his personal Letterboxd).
'SMPO' was another 2024 clue, which is no doubt Slap the Monster on Page One, and a good chance that's the Italian title teased since we're coming to the end of the year now. Of course some of these guesses could be wrong for November as things get delayed and pushed into 2025 (certainly feels like Buñuel's The Exterminating Angel won't be 'til early 2025, alongside the Oshima set).
At least the American title in question is an easy cert this month: Ray Milland's Panic in Year Zero! ('PY0'), and the French title may or may not be Truffaut's The Story of Adele H ('SOA'). I say 'may not' because I still hold out some hope the 'RB' clue was for a Bresson title (potentially Four Nights of a Dreamer, Lancelot du lac, or The Devil, Probably).
I'd still be happy with more Truffaut though - in fact, I'd be surprised if Radiance didn't also get Pocket Money and The Green Room, both of which are also available from MGM via Park Circus (though their rights to his films are expiring, according to Laura Truffaut). No idea why The Wild Child and The Man Who Loved Women both aren't listed on there too though. I suppose once MGM lose the rights, perhaps MK2 will pick them up so they'll still be available at a later date should Radiance want to release more of these.

I guess it'd have to be. I could've sworn Fran had said he was only focusing on indie American cinema from the 70s-present, not that this would be straying too far from that parameter

Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
Sounds similar to Cinématographe's mission statement, but I suppose Fran might have said something along those lines in interviews (certainly the first few US titles were 90's, then a few 70's ones since then). Perhaps this is just a one-off in the same way Scream and Scream Again seemingly was, to mix things up and maintain an air of 'unpredictability'. I'd also argue Milland is a curious Hollywood star (even as a director), and as far as AIP/Corman stuff goes you could easily do much worse...therewillbeblus wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 5:43 pmI guess it'd have to be. Either way I get the impression from the curation that it's a mixture of quality titles that have bizarrely been missed by other UK labels, and more niche selections from various national cinemas (some barely seen before). I'm certainly not complaining as the quality of presentation so far is consistently spot-on, and if a few crowdpleasers mean more Oshima and Buñuel and Matsumoto and Petri then I'm all for it.

I was kind of hoping they'd have a Hong Kong title for tomorrow, specifically My Heart Is That Eternal Rose, which would complement their first HK film nicely.

Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
New podcast interview with Fran Simeoni
Some things noted from the interview:
- large boxset (likely containing 5-6 titles) is in production
- Cosa Nostra set was originally planned to contain 4 films but they couldn't secure the rights to Confessions of a Police Captain
- more films with Gian Maria Volonté coming
- when asked about 4K UHD releases, Fran responds by saying "watch this space"
- dream release for Fran is "The Mattei Affair" but likely won't be released by them due to rights issue
- more Commedia all'italiana boxsets planned
- another Letterboxd list is planned that lists another 10 films that they couldn't get the rights to
- typical time it takes for a release to go from inception to the shelf takes around a year, so sales won't have an immediate impact on what's released next
- he then spends the rest of the episode talking about August announcements and the July releases, like how Japan Organised Crime Boss was the first Fukusaku film that he ever saw, how he thinks Truffaut has never made a bad film, and how he found out about the films of Tai Kato when he was researching World Noir and became a fan of it
- there will be a pause on Tai Kato films for next year while they focus on another Japanese director

Thanks yolo for writing those notes from the interview. Excited for these multiple films by another Japanese director (I assume Oshima?). And it’s surprising the Commedia set is the first of several considering it hasn’t sold well. But I’m not complaining!

Correct! I'd be surprised if they all got announced next month though, considering Buñuel's The Exterminating Angel is one of the teased announcements according to the newsletter...that is unless the SM box set is for a Buñuel set?

Re: Radiance Films General Discussion & Wishlist
I just received my July and August titles, and I noticed something curious: di Leo's The Italian Connection is Raro spine 6, while Revenge of the Beast is spine 11. Spine 7 was di Leo's The Boss, and the first four spines are covered. We're therefore missing spine 5 - maybe another di Leo? could it be the new restoration of Milano Calibre 9? - and spines 8-10. I'm guessing 8-10 are a trio of films by an Italian director, maybe even a boxed set.

I hope it's not because the only truly brilliant restoration of a di Leo film is Arrow's edition of Milano Calibre 9, one of the best ever releases of an Italian genre title. What A Disgrace wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 10:18 amI just received my July and August titles, and I noticed something curious: di Leo's The Italian Connection is Raro spine 6, while Revenge of the Beast is spine 11. Wondering if there's any other di Leo or Lenzi films, that have a Raro release that are likely to be incoming to the RaroxRadiance label? My hope is to see one of the hard boiled Lenzi or di Leo films still not available on Blu ray but I realise that's unlikely.
Might be remembering wrong but were Raro releasing di Leo's comedy Nick the Sting starring Lucy Merenda - or was it Loaded Guns starring Ursula Andress?

I would like to see Caliber 9; Shoot First, Die Later; Loaded Guns; Kidnap Syndicate; Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man; Nick the Sting; and Rulers of the City, all of which have been released by Raro in the US. I’m sure the Radiance editions would be superior and All Region like The Italian Connection and The Boss have been.
